50 Shades of Grey….  Why Grey is Huge

50 Shades of Grey.  We all know there is a psychology behind colours.  For example, red is the color of energy, passion, action, ambition and determination.  We choose our clothing based on how we feel that day.  However in our homes we tend to go more neutral with browns, greys, whites, creams, and blacks.  This neutral base gives us more flexibility and longevity and is the perfect backdrop for pops of colour.  Just about every show home I entered in 2016 was done in grays.  This is a shift from the previous browns and golds.  What inspires colour trends and what does it really mean?

Color Psychology

Therefore from a color psychology perspective, grey is the color of compromise. As a result, neither black nor white, it is the transition between two non-colors.

Being both motionless and emotionless, grey is solid and stable, creating a sense of calm and composure, relief from a chaotic world. As a result, the color grey is subdued, quiet and reserved. It does not stimulate, energize, rejuvenate or excite and after a busy chaotic day at work we crave this solitude.

Grey is controlled.

It has a steadying effect on other colors with which it comes into contact, toning down the stronger and brighter colors and illuminating the softer colors. Rarely is gray a perfect mix of black and white. It is often has elements of other colors such as blue, green, pink, mauve or yellow within it which lift it and energize it. Grey is a perfect base to almost any color. Too much of the color grey creates sadness and depression and a tendency to loneliness and isolation. Adding some colour to the palette can change the feel of the room.

Light grey is soothing and calming. It enlightens, saves and rescues those in difficult life situations.

Dark grey is conventional and constrained. It is serious and solemn, inflexible and strict. It relates to self-denial and self-discipline.

Grey is Grey.

It’s how and what we do with the grey that gives it feeling and meaning.
